TASK 1: PERSONIFICATION, BIG IDEA

For the story, I came out with an idea where the world was being dominated more by creatures after a war between humans and creatures where humans were defeated. So it's a total mess and since humans need to survive from the creatures, they live in a moving town. I got the idea of moving town from Mortal Engines and Tate no Youusha no Nariagari.

Fig 1.1 Moodboard for the moving town

As for the characters, I chose the companion relationship between the characters where they lived together from small. For the first character, I thought it as a girl where it's more challenging when a girl goes for adventuring since a male character looks much stronger. And I had the ideas based on Batak ethnic group which live in mountain, where they perform black magic , hunts, and so on. And one of the iconic things from them is ulos. At the end, I came out with the settings where there's a girl being abandoned by her family because they believed on the ritual results, saying she's a curse child. All that left to her is an ulos. As she's growing up, she started to realize that it's only her and her companion in the mountain where after that they wants to explore and figure out the truth why she's being left out.

Fig 1.2 Moodboard for first character

While for the second character, I thought about a contradiction things like where the creatures won the war and dangerous for humans since they still hunted human however, I still chose creatures for her, as her companion. At first, it's kind of confusing of which creatures should I used as her companion and I even got some ideas from people where the creatures can copy any forms of living things but at the end, I didn't use that idea since I wanted to stay in the track. Hence I used the idea where the second character was one of the most dangerous creature which also caused humans lose. As he grown up together with the first character.

Fig 1.3 Moodboard for second character

After that, I tried to sketch the first character where it's a teenage girl who wants to explore the world since she only knows her own place and the place near her which were forests, rivers, and so on.

Fig 1.4 Sketches of the first characters on paper

I got some feedbacks where it's good to add some notes for the characters, but I also needed to have some concepts for her companion too.

For their silhouettes Since I didn't really have ideas for her companion, I tried various creatures for it.

Fig 1.7 Silhouettes of the second character

After I showing the silhouettes to Ms. Anis, I was told to choose one of the creatures and at the end, I chose the silhouettes that looked a like like snake. Since I chose it already, I did the silhouettes again where it had different equipments, pose, and so on. For the second character, I had an idea based on Cerastes, a mythological creature, and Saharan horned viper where both of it have an iconic thing which was  two horns and they are considered as poisonous one. As snake also kinds of small although it can move faster than any creatures, as it suits as her companion since she had been left out since she's small. I also used a new moodboards for the snaket.

Fig 1.10 Sketches of early concept

I ended up compile the design into one, by using and combining some clothes from the options that I had. I also gave name to them which were Osa for the first character and Tio for the second character. At first, I tried to use a Ko, from Kau in Indonesia, as her name which sounds ruder since Batak ethnic kind of having a rude tone. Although I ended using Osa as her name which has a meaning 'godlike' and based on a person name Osa Johnson, an American adventurer, photographer, and writer. While I chose Tio for the second character since Osa lives alone and Tio seems like an easy word to say it, even Tio likes it too.

TASK 2: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, SKETCHES

Poses and Expressions

Before choosing which poses for both characters, I sketched some poses for them. For Osa, I drew more poses that seems tough or rude for her, since she needed to study how to survive and hunt by herself.

Fig 2.1 Poses

For fig 2.1, the poses were based on real pictures as our model, and I also tried some colors into it but then I was been told that since the art style that I wanted to go with is more to chibi one, then I should draw chibi art style too.

Fig 2.3 Some sketches that I did digitally

Fig 2.4 Poses with expressions

I wanted to express that she usually sniffs her food first before she eats it, to know wether it's poisonous or not. And I was told that I needed to look out for Osa's body proportion since it's not proportionally and as for Tio, I needed to use different angles to express it or it would be boring. I also needed to do more poses and expressions too.

Fig 2.5 Poses with expressions

Fig 2.6 Osa's expressions

I changed some expressions since I wanted to express her smiles awkwardly since she doesn't know how to as she doesn't have parents figure in her life. That's why when she tries to smile, it's so awkward. I also wanted to express her like she's really taking care of her weapon and often cleaning it up.

Fig 2.7 Tio's expressions

As for Tio, I expressed him sometimes as cute creature when he's around with someone he loves and holds dear, which is Osa. Even though he's a snake, he also expresses mad and sad reactions to people. I drawed he's eating lizard too (where for Mr. Ridzwan it looks like frog) which express he likes to eat reptiles and amphibians, since he's poisonous.

TASK 3: CHARACTER CREATION

After that, I came back to their reference sheet where I added colors and more details.

Fig 3.1 Osa's reference sheet

Fig 3.2 Tio's reference sheet

For Osa, I chose shirt with long sleeves to cover her arms and give her warmness since she lived on mountain slope but she's still using short pants since it's easy for her to move. She has different eye colors, which was heterochromia, to indicate that she's different and that's what made her parents believed that she was a curse child. With spear as weapon where she could use it for short range, by striking, stabbing, and so on, and long range, by throwing it. She also has gun that has been modified for her to go up on trees and rocks easily. While she has a little torn on the map where she acquired it from a corpse, which makes her wants to explore the world. And she's taking the ulos as her charms since it was the only thing that they left for her, and as one of the evidence that she can ask around to other people. She also has Tio's first tooth on her spear, where she wants to express that Tio is someone that she hold dear, even though he's not a human.

For Tio, I drawed him with more cute art style but he still poisonous teeth where I wanted to express he's a cute creature that growing up together with a human, even though he's poisonous but he's different than his races. Even he also has marks on his back, which he's being recognized as dangerous creature but also obedient and harmless towards people that he knows.

Actually I was told that I drawed Tio to cute but then suddenly people saw the word "poisonous" which was quite contradict with his design, and maybe I could add somethings that make him looks dangerous like adding arms on him, or else but then I sticked to the design since I inspired by Cerastes and Saharan horned viper.

As for their hero poses, I picked one from the 5 poses.

Fig 3.3 Osa's and Tio's hero pose

Fig 3.4 Osa's t-pose and hero pose on by using ZBrush

For their event skin, I chose Pyjama Party where I was wondering what if they make friends and staying overnight together, and wasting time as friend with others, since Osa and Tio grown up together and only depend on each other.

Fig 3.5 Sketches of the skins

I got an idea where her weapon was usually spear, why not change it into pillows or bolster, since it's more related to the theme of the skin. And if she's taking a spear to pyjama party, people will scare of her. I also dressed Tio up so that people can't recognize him as one of the dangerous creatures.

Fig 3.6 Trying colors on the skins

After I tried to color it, I realized that no matter what colors I used, I will like the one where they're wearing dinosaurs onesie for it. And the one with monochrome colors came second, but then those colors was inspired by corpses or living dead colors, where it looks like it doesn't match with the them pyjama party since pyjama party usually gives more active vibes.

Fig 3.7 Final skins

As I finalized only one skin, I also chose the weapons out where it suits with the outfit more, which were bones, and meat with bone. Since it more to bolster type, I imagined that she uses those things like bat by swinging it around, or hammer by hitting and smashing things.

TASK 4: COMPILATION AND BOARDS

Moving on to the artwork that showing the connection between the characters.

Fig 4.1 Sketch of the artwork

After I sketching it out, I felt like there's some parts it off and it didn't really what I wanted so I tried searching up references to use.

Fig 4.5 Final outcome

Finally, I compiled it all into 4 boards to print it out. As for border, I used the ulos that I drew to make it more traditional and using "The Beginning of Their Journey" as their title to express that they embark to explore the world.

REFLECTION

Even though I draw a lot, I still need to practice more on body proportions, expressions, poses, colors, and so on. From this module, I learned how to come out with characters properly since I used to create my own OCs but most of them don't really have the own settings and so on. As my presentation isn't that great, I hope that I explain well on this blog and through the visual. I also kind of having struggle with it since I'm trying to get out from my comfort zone where I usually draw male characters and using more anime/manga style. As I feel that my hard work being paid off after I compiling it all into one and printing it out.
